Home Baked Goodness on New Year's Day

I don't know about you, but I've been wanting more and more to nest at home and make more home made goodies. After the indulgences of the holidays, I just feel like hunkering down by the fire, eating simple home made food, and having some quiet time.

We did just that on New Year's Day. We hosted a brunch for family, and hubby was inspired to make a rustic loaf of bread after his success with a thin crust potato pizza. We started off with the most basic of ingredients: yeast, some sugar, organic whole wheat flour and regular white flour, milk and eggs. And no recipe - made up by hubby as he went along.

The process started the night before with prepping the dough. Plenty of kneading and mixing...

There was something satisfying about watching the dough rise into a giant ball over time. The kneading process was repeated a few times.

By morning, we were ready to put our masterpiece into the oven. An irregular shaped loaf was formed.

And voilà, freshly sliced bread. I was just stirring out of bed when this popped into the oven so waking up to the aromas was wonderful.

To accompany, we made pancakes with blueberry and strawberry compotes, sausages, Irish cut bacon, and mimosas. We had a few slices leftover the next day which made the BEST toast with smoked salmon and faux hollandaise sauce that we made with creme fraiche.

2010, you've been quite something but it's time to say goodbye. To all my readers of A Beautiful Life, I want to thank you for your readership, for your conversation, and for inspiring me to keep sharing with you all those little things in life I cherish. I wish you a very happy new year. And 2011, I am ready for you!

There's been a lot of change in my life lately (see Nala), and there's lots more to come over the next 12 months. I can't say I know the direction of where this blog is going, but that's all part of the adventure, right?

As you know I'm super behind on my blog posts: I still have Europe pictures from Amsterdam and Copenhagen I haven't posted. And there's more travel to look forward to with a Hawaii surf trip in February - better whip into bikini shape fast after all this holiday eating.

Speaking of the holidays, they go by too fast. Spending lots of time with my puppy Nala on beach walks and forest hikes.

Sporting new Nobis parka, Mavi cords, and yes, I'm wearing UGGS and I love them.

We had one of my best friends Valerie over one night and made thin crust potato pizza from scratch. Yes, potato pizza with thick sliced pancetta, buffalo mozzarella, and chile flakes. It's kind of like eating perogies on a crispy crust. I'm sorry I didn't take a picture of it but it was damn good.

Hubby and I went snowboarding for the first time in about 2 years in Whistler with our mates Allie and Allan on Boxing Day. Tons of powder and we had a great time. Kinda makes me want to come out of snowboarding retirement and ride again. Wrapped things up with a late lunch at Araxi where I had a lovely cherry tomato scallop pasta.

And finally, I've been putting on my annual tradition of watching the A&E version of Pride and Prejudice. I love it!

My friends, meet Nala

My sincerest apologies to all my readers; I know I haven't blogged since October! The past 4 weeks have been insanely busy since hubby and I took our puppy home. My friends, I would like you to meet Nala, my Rhodesian Ridgeback puppy.

Pictures have been hard to come by as capturing a wriggly pup isn't the easiest thing to do (lots of blurry pics of a small furry creature). I've also had minimal sleep since she's joined our household, so not really in the mood for a ton of pictures. We are getting some portraits done hopefully in the new year but for now, here are some home pics mostly taken from my phone!

Hanging out with the Canucks

Imagine that one morning you are told you get to not only meet the Vancouver Canucks, but also play Nintendo Wii, hang out, and eat dinner with them the next evening for charity? Imagine that happening to a girl who has been a hardcore Canucks fan since 1989, who was there at the games in the '94 playoff run, who still to this day loves her team very much despite all the heartaches. Well, it happened to me. (heads up - this is going to be a long post).

Through the kindness of others, I attended the Sports Celebrity for Charity Gala supported by the Canucks that raises money for the Special Olympics. It's truly a wonderful event where you get to interact with the players, bid on an auction, and then break bread with some amazing athletes. An incredibly worthy cause, and the Canucks organization is commended for supporting it. A big hand should go to the players too who show up with such enthusiasm and spend much of the day with a special needs child. This year, my (former) crush Mason Raymond was the spokesperson.

My first thought was, what do I wear?? I pulled out my Herve Leger bandage dress, boyfriend jacket, and some sky-high platform booties. Classic quilted Chanel bag on my arm.

And from my pictures, you can see the Chanel wasn't the only piece of arm candy I had ;). My friend Kat (@KatArnett) said it was just like Hump Day Hunks, but in real life!

The evening started off with some Wii-ing (is that a word?) with Mason and Jeff Tambellini. Mase and Jeff were both really sweet.

I got my official pictures taken with Ryan Kesler and Kevin Bieksa, then Henrik and his two trophies, and finally with Lu and Mase. I apologize I don't have these pictures scanned yet but I'll do another post with them. Ryan was a lot of fun to be around - I tried to convince him to get teammate Alex Burrows on Twitter but with no success.

One of the funnest things I did was play table hockey against Swedish defenseman Alex Edler. I was worried that I would suck, but then I ended up beating him. I couldn't stop smiling. =)

For dinner, the celebrity guest at our table was Peter Schaefer. He was really funny and had lots of entertaining stories to tell. I have some funny group pictures of our table with Peter and Raffi Torres.

One of my highlights of the night was getting to know Danish forward Jannick Hansen a little more. I really enjoyed our conversation, and I really hope he flourishes this year on the third line because he really deserves it.

Five Winter Picks To Keep You Cute and Cosy

Happy weekend! Hope you're enjoying this beautiful, sunny fall day. The temperature has dipped to a chilly 4 degrees Celsius this morning (that's 39 Fahrenheit), and it's got me excited about some beautiful winter clothing and accessories.

Nobis has a gorgeous line of mens and womens parkas that look sleek, urban, and warm. I really want their Luna parka, and I can't wait until mid November when the jackets will be arriving in stores locally. FAB, The Premium Denim Store, is supposed to carry the line.

Nobis makes super cute knitted hats and beanies, too.

I've also ordered a pair of the below Manitobah Mukluks. The company is Aboriginal-owned and all shoes are made in Canada. They have many gorgeous styles from ranging from tall to short boots. The soles, unlike other mukluks, can be made with a rubber, treaded vibram sole which makes them suitable for snow and ice. You can choose from a choice of faux fur, or rabbit, coyote or fox fur. I know some of you are going to disagree with the use of animal fur, but please do remember, historically the use of fur is part of Aboriginal culture. Gravity Pope sells Manitobah Mukluks, although their website didn't carry the half-wrap style shown here.

I couldn't help getting a tie-dyed scarf by Brightly Twisted from Hills of Kerrisdale (you can buy it online from Vionnet Boutique, pictured here). It's so warm and soft, and it's the perfect pairing to my white burn-out tee and skinny grey jeans.

My Life's About to Change

In a really big way. Like, four paws kinda way.

Hubby and I will be welcoming a puppy to our household in about 4 weeks time! I'm beyond excited - we've waited for a long time to bring a dog into our family and now it's finally happening. A little sooner than I expected but we are happy all the same.

I've already scoped out some pretty neat things to get for her, and I'm definitely going to get one of these cowichan inspired sweaters by Granted.

Also love these very classic brown leather collars from Dog & Hydrant in Yaletown.

I'll be revealing the little pup's name and will post her pictures when she comes home. If you have a dog, I'd love to hear from you - any tips, classes to go to, fave pet stores - tell me about it!

It's A Fine Line

...between something that's working, and something that's not. Take this pleated skirt. I loved the intricate lace and tulle detailing, but it just didn't quite sit right. Too saggy at the hips, and I was ready to write it off.

My rose buckle belt saved it from being another impulse buy heading for the donation bin. It was a favourite item of mine when I was in Europe, simply because it made everything look and fit better. The elastic meant it was flexible to fit on nearly any bottom, pants, shorts or skirts.

Nearly gone too to the bin was this Talula navy blue blouse, which I loved at first sight but then soon grew tired. Love's a fickle thing, right?

But suddenly, paired with equally blue Marc by Marc Jacobs pumps, I was madly in love again.

You Feed My Soul

If Elizabeth Gilbert had Italy for the "Eat" part of Eat, Pray, Love, then France would definitely be mine when it comes to the art of nourishing your soul.

I ate my way through half a dozen villages in Provence, stopping at local cafes, boulangeries, and bistros. I'sle sur la Sorgue, Loumarin, Ansouis, Cadenet, and my favourite Bonnieux, where I stopped for tarte aux framboise.

There's something so gorgeous about simply eating what's fresh, local and in season. Aubergine caviar, zucchini tart, shaved black truffle omelet, ripe melon salad - these were the flavours of the summer. A glass or two of wine (pink or white at lunch, red at dinner) was always at hand.

Then, there's La Closerie. Recommended as a "must" by our hosts at the guesthouse, we wisely booked a table and treated ourselves to a 3-course meal under the vine-covered terrace.

To start, ricotta stuffed courgette flowers with chanterelle mushrooms and the largest shaved discs of black truffle I'd ever eaten. The earthiness of the chanterelles and truffles complimented each other, and the deepness contrasted beautifully with the freshness of the courgette flowers. The creamy ricotta smoothed everything together into one giant love-in. If I can eat my way into spirituality, then this must be the stairway to heaven.

Hubby's starter of smoked salmon, spring greens and waffle seemed unconventional but I assure you it was just about as good as my truffle decadence. The waffle was more savory than sweet, crispy on the outside but fluffy on the inside. We both believe there's more than 1 path to enlightenment and if in doubt, why not try both?

My religious food experience was just warming up when my main arrived. Roasted white fish with cherry tomatoes, squash puree, and baby potatoes. The skin was blackened and crispy while the fish was moist and flakey.

The stars came out and dessert came with it to bring me home to nirvana. Profiteroles with vanilla ice cream and chocolate sauce.

It's perfect, simple, honest food that reminds me: it's been A Good Year.

Two Nights...

... is not enough in any great city. Especially if that city is as sexy as Stockholm. It was a quickie stop in the land of Ikea, hockey greats, and bombshell blondes (Hello Freddie Ljungberg!), and we made the most of it.

I dressed up for a night out with hubby at the Michelin-starred F12 restaurant. The Swedes are known to be genetically blessed with beauty so I felt the pressure to doll it up in a Herve Leger one-shouldered dress. Unfortunately my coworker convinced me out of bringing my strappy hot five-inch platforms, so I was stuck with my more casual wedges (grr). I guess I should thank her because the cobbled streets would have killed me and likely destroyed my shoes.

I wish I had some photos of our meal at F12 but they turned out horribly. I have to say I was disappointed with the meal, being my first Michelin-starred experience. The overuse of foam, which I ranted about at The Unreserved, is all I really remember about the cuisine. There was supposedly a "berry" theme to the night which I don't recall, and my dessert souffle didn't satisfy because it needed more ice-cream.

We visited the Swedish Royal Palace museum and upon our luck, just happened to see the changing of the guard ceremony which consisted of about 50 horses marching down the main promenade. The rows of grey and brown horses were so elegant and of course I was in horsey heaven just being able to see the royal four-hoofed fleet.

Old town, Gamla Stan, was charming with its narrow alleys and cobbled streets, but quite touristy. After a full day of walking, we stopped for a light lunch and coffee break and just soaked in the hustle and bustle of the town.

We stayed at the Clarion Stockholm Hotel in the trendy SoFo (Sodermalm) area and it was lovely. Very modern and clean, and a very peaceful night's sleep. Sodermalm has tons of boutique shopping, cafes and bars, and we enjoyed an afternoon of browsing in the shops (picked up a couple of pretty tunics). I'll have some more pics posted as soon I as load up my pictures.

Luminence

That famous soft golden light of Provence that inspired so many artists. Sweet lavender air. Softy chirping cicadas. And a view towards an ancient chateau.

I spent one week in heaven just outside the small village of Ansouis. We stayed in a little farmhouse paradise called Ferme de La Platane, nestled in the valleys of the Luberon mountains, surrounded by vineyards.

Our 18th century stone mas was absolutely perfect with our own terrace that looked onto the chateau, full kitchen and the use of the BBQ, boules pitch, and of course a sparkling pool. The hosts Rosemary and Peter were extremely helpful and generous, making bookings to local restaurants and attending to our needs. One night we even did a communal BBQ with another couple (hello Catrin and Andy!) and shared our feast of goodies we had each gathered earlier that day from the local market. Marinated herb chicken, mixed sausages of pork and lapin (sorry bunnies), ratatouille, mashed potatoes, goat cheese salad, fresh baguettes, more cheese to finish. We ate and drank in merriment until Van Gogh's starry night came to life.

You can just see the chateau off to the right of hubby from the terrace. Magnificent.

Did you miss me?

Hope you're having a good Labour day long weekend. Are you all ready for Fall yet? Back from Europe now, trying to sort out my pictures so I can get blogging again. In all I visited Copenhagen, Stockholm, Amsterdam, Provence, and Paris - a whirlwind of a trip. I loved spending time in the museums and seeing the art by the Dutch masters and my favourite, the French impressionists. Walking into the Musee D'Orsay, I felt like a kid in a candy store. Renoir, Van Gogh, Degas, Monet all in one place? Squee!

I wish I could say I drew these but I cheated and used SketchMe, which I'm completely obsessed with right now. The sketches are from some pics of me poolside in Provence at the wonderful place we stayed at. I wrote a short post about the pleasures of Provence at The Unreserved if you want a sneak peak, but there'll be more on that to come here.

Happy Sunday! What are you all up to today? I attended a wedding by myself last night for the first time in a long time because hubby was not available. It was definitely a strange feeling being there without a date! Slightly awkward but fortunately for me, there were a few people I knew there from my high school days that made it a little bit easier.

I put together some of my fave photos from my recent weekend in Salt Spring. The above picture is probably one of my faves - it was taken on the resort property that we stayed at, Hastings House. You can read my review of Hastings House over at The Unreserved.

Colour Block in Pastel

I love grey and pink, and I pulled this outfit together as inspired by the resort collections and their use of colour blocking. Only in soft pastels instead of brights.

This little black crop top, which I had completely forgotten about, acts as a nice division between the sorbet-like shades and cuts an interesting shape at the top.

I found so many treasures on my Salt Spring Island weekend, including the adorable little owl I found in a little hippie shop by the ferry - look at his amber eyes! I also picked up a few silver hammered stacked rings from the market.

Some of you asked for a better picture of my new rose-petal bead bracelet - so here it is! I'm pairing it with another of my Salt Spring Island treasure finds - a custom made hammered cuff.

Treasure Trove at Salt Spring Island Market

I'm back!! Spent a wonderful long weekend at Salt Spring Island which is a couple of hours by ferry away from Vancouver. It was very relaxing and felt like a world away, yet we were always busy in the sense that there was always something to see or do. I'll do another post with some of my fave pics on the trip, which was full of hiking, checking out arts and craft studios, visiting organic farms, swimming, and of course culinary delights!

I'm going to focus this post on one of my favourite things to do on Salt Spring - the weekly Saturday market. The market brings together all of the artists, craftspeople, farmers and other entrepreneurs on Salt Spring to hawk their goods. Here you'll find delicious home made tarts, organic produce, local smoked salmon, jewelry, hand-thrown pottery, soap, and just about anything else that might be artsy, hippy, whimsical and even wacky. It's a chaotic few hours when the market is on, and it's the place to be on a sunny Saturday. Shoppers jockey for space amongst the booths, and visitors and locals alike are eager to fill their reusable shopping bags with organic goodies like heirloom tomatoes, cheese, and spring greens.

Natural, hand-made soaps...

I came away with some fantastic treasures: a custom hammered silver cuff by Salt Spring Silversmith, stackable silver rings by Mint Jewellery Design, olive-oil lavender soaps from Bare With Me, and something I had never heard of before: Rose Petal Bead jewelry.

Creator Marcus Knox takes rose petals and cooks them down into a moldable mash, from which he hand rolls each bead. The colour of the bead is black no matter what colour the rose was in its former incarnation. The beads retain a faint rose scent for the duration of their life.. The sweet fragrance is enhanced when warmed by the wearer's body.

The history of the beads is fascinating. The origins trace back to 15th century India where monks made them as prayer beads for counting during meditation. It was adopted by the Catholics and rose petal beads were commonly used in the Rosary.

I couldn't resist picking up a bracelet with an uneven pearl, and a rosary with a mother-of-pearl cross. Not only do I love the romantic symbolism of the rose, but I feel connected to the spiritual origins. Stylistically, I'm digging the dark, edgy feel of the black beads, yet the pearly accents sweeten it up. I put the bracelet on at the market and have worn it ever since.

I'm sorry I don't have better pictures of my sundress dress, which is new from Fine Finds. I'll post my outfit properly soon but these are the pictures I had on hand for now. Here are a couple of pics of my cousins though enjoying the market.

Style Challenge: What to Wear to the Stampede?

I have been stumped lately with blogging, partly because I haven't had time to take pictures of all my new purchases with mom being in town and partly because I haven't been all that inspired. Last night, my sister in law, who happens to be one of my best friends, inspired me to write some sartorial advice for her. She is going to the Calgary Stampede this weekend and needs something to wear that is cute but classy. Now I've never been to the Calgary Stampede, but having seen some fashion disasters from the Cloverdale Rodeo, I've provided some alternatives.

The key is to mix things up and borrow from themes that are related to, but not limited to, just the western look. Try broadening to an overall more country look, or the related Americana/Prairie look, and you 'll have a lot more options. Or, consider trends which may have western influences but are updated in a modern way (think fringing, studding, destroyed denim, plaid, suede). Top it off with a cowboy hat or a straw fedora if you feel like it but I don't think it's required to create the vibe.

Vintage Cowgirl: This look is inspired by the cool cowgirls of times past. A classy silk western shirt with denim shorts or maybe a eyelet tiered skirt and tank with cowboy boots. Accessories should be kept simple. Horsey motifs (horseshoes, bridle/bit inspired jewelry) would work nicely.

Country Floral: With florals everywhere this spring/summer, they are an easy trend to incorporate into a western look. Small flowers, against a backdrop of a pastel colour, has a country look to it that makes it suitable for the Stampede. I love these itty bitty high-waisted shorts. Pair with an off-the-shoulder white blouse and sky-high clogs.

City Slicker: For the city girl, a black dress with fringe details will give you a western look without going too down country. Wear the cowboy boots if you dare. A studded wristlet gussies it up.

Prairie Princess: I'm crazy about the prairie look of denim and colourful prints like gingham, plaid, and it's an easy look to throw together that's cute but not too dressy.

Double Denim (aka Canadian Tuxedo): It wasn't too long ago that double denim was a big no-no. But this summer, the Canadian Tuxedo has hit the mainstream big time. So mix up your blue and white and whatever other colour of denim you have, and get ready to line dance in your mini cowboy boots.

Whats Behind That Smile?

I'm looking particularly happy here.

Why I am smiling so? Because after waiting for nearly two months, my Alexa bag from Mulberry arrived. Along with my mom, of course.

I've used this bag pretty much every day this week - one of the reasons I wanted it so badly is because of it's versatility. The long straps mean the bag can be worn several different ways - across like a messenger, looped around short like a shoulder bag, or tucked in for a school bag look. The brown leather is soft for comfort yet sturdy enough to hold heaps of things. This is going to be my It-bag for all those plane and train rides in Europe.

All good reasons to smile. And of course, some TLC and pampering from Mom too goes a long way. =D

It's been too long since I've posted, and what better way to get back into the swing of things with another installment of Hump Day Hunks. This time I'm holding nothing back, and I've put together some of the best looking World Cup footballing chaps for your Wednesday viewing pleasure. Included in his 2nd feature on Hump Day Hunks is French cutie Yoann Gourcuff, who must be sobbing in disbelief after he was tossed out of the crucial France-South Africa game which led to France's exit. Poor Yoann, I'm sure there'll be girls a plenty for you to take comfort in.

England too might find they have a couple of sexy sulkers in Frank Lampard and Steven Garrard if the Three Lions fail to advance to the next round.

I Think I Know What's On Your Mind

A quickie post to show you some pics of my new hair and dinner at a local French bistro. I'm having fun playing around with my hair - some days I've slicked it back (think Victoria Beckham), others I've pushed it forwards messily and finished with my favourite surf spray. I've glammed it up with pretty, tulle and pearl adorned handbands, or if I'm feeling a more grungy vibe, I reach for my braided suede headband. There's a style to suit my chameleon moods. NOTE: Please ignore the horribly tacky sign - I didn't realize it was in the picture and we were in a hurry to get inside the restaurant for our table.

I've used a variety of products to style my hair and I've found a few that I like:

1. Best Gel for a slicked back pixie: I tried Bumble and Bumble BB Gel and Oribe Gel Serum (thanks to BeautyMark for giving me both samples) and by far I liked Oribe for a firm hold to last all day but wasn't sticky or too stiff. The BB Gel is nice for light hold but I can't trust it'll stay all day.

2. Best Surf Spray: John Masters Organics Sea Mist hands down gives you that straight-out-of-the-surf look. I prefer it to Bumble and Bumble's Surf Spray which is a bit heavy and sticky. Plus, Sea Mist has a sweet lavender scent so you don't smell like a kelpy seawitch =D.

3. Best Hair Spray: I will go with Bumble and Bumble's Does It All Spray because it provides an airy and flexible hold that highlights the piecey-ness.

Now onto the food...Pied-a-Terre is a fave of mine because of how low-key it is and the food I've had there on numerous occasion has always been good. I just love simple, classic food, and this French bistro has it down.

We started with a French Onion Tarte with Bacon Frisse Salad.

Hubby ordered the Lamb Duo special with braised and roast lamb. Served with green beans and some pastry.

I thoroughly enjoyed the Fish Special which was pan roasted sole with morels and peas in a chive herby cream sauce. Served with asparagus, mashed potatoes and a roasted tomato.

We had no room for dessert but that was probably a good thing because I can never decide between their Creme Brulee, Chocolate Tarte, or Lemon Tarte.

Better late than never, right ladies? As promised in my last Hump Day Hunks: Football Edition, I would dedicate a whole HDH to just the players on Team Italy. Why? I think it's obvious isn't it, especially when Dolce & Gabbana features them year after year, pretty much naked.

I must confess that unlike hockey, I really don't know too much about football or the players for that matter. So let's just get straight to it.

Chop Chop

This is the last shoot of me with my longish bob because today I cropped it all off into a pixie! Not quite as short as Carey Mulligan but definitely inspired by her as well as Michelle Williams' new cut she debuted at Cannes. Not that it matters in these photos anyways since you can't see my head! I promise to have photies soon.

I've been living in these slim cut cargos by Armani Exchange. Never thought I would put on another pair of army green cargos after my college years but with the tapered cuff leg, they are a different breed from the sloppy version of the late 90's/early 2000's.

Looking at the tiniest bit of sun peeking through these pics is making me a sad given the miserable weather we've had. On the bright side, the rain is reminding me of my mini Tofino getaway. My friends Allie and Allan were also in Tofino so we had a chance to hang out. We went to the Spotted Bear Bistro for dinner and then I hit the water with them for some evening surf with my brand new board. I had so much fun, and I'm so glad we got to spend some time together.

I ran away and joined a harem

Remember when I asked just over a year ago, "To harem or not to harem"? Some of you, like my friend Taline, said yes.

I found these low slung harem hipsters in Hong Kong. As soon as I put them on, I never looked back. They are incredibly comfortable and amazingly, the accentuated hip was not as unflattering as I expected. I've been rolling them into cuffs and wearing them with all sorts of crazy platforms and high heels. Like these Betsey Johnson platforms from my uni days that I completely forgot about.

My sheer rose blouse is made in Japan, but like the engine-red tuxedo jacket, it was scooped up in Hong Kong. I think my bag looks something like from Grandma's attic (nevermind that my Gran never lived in a house with an attic); it was a basement bargain for $2 at the York House School Fair. Easily my cheapest hangbag of all time.

Happy May long weekend for all my Canadian readers! Anyone have any exciting plans? I'm looking forward to some good cold surf, fresh BBQ seafood, and key lime pie.

Can a piece of coral...

...really inspire a whole outfit?

In this case, the answer is overwhelmingly, YES.

Ever since I got this remade vintage coral ring from my momma, I can't stop crushing on all things coral. The ring is even extra special because the coral was originally one half of an earring mom wore on her wedding day. My sister-in-law has the other half, made into an identical ring surrounded by white and yellow tiny diamonds.

I wore this same dress earlier in the week to JK Model's Anniversary Party held at the upscale LEONE boutique. It was a fun night hanging out with some local bloggers, including Kelsey of The Anthology, Nicole of Le Mode Du Jour, Aces, Nikki of A Haute Mess, Olivia of Stylestruck, Lisa of Solo Lisa, Raul of Hummingbird604, and Erin of Haus of Hybrid.

Heart Shaped Box

Spring's romantic movement in ruffles, lace, and frills has me on the lookout for antique-y, super detailed jewelry. Anything that looks victorian, with motifs such as crosses, fleur de lis, hearts, and animals, or anything my grandma or pa might have worn, is catching my eye right now.

Like the pieces created by Vancouver's own Pyrrha. The rings, necklaces, and bracelets have an aged look which are cast using from 19th century wax seals. Each piece has a meaning behind it: the above Lion and Stag ring has a crest which reads "Neither be fearful nor wanting". The Horse Cameo below signifies courage, intelligence and grace.

I spotted this cute dove in a cage piece on Mod Cloth. I would get rid of the pink bow but other than that, it's a lovely accessory at about $20.

Something else to keep my eyes out for is a vintage locket. I love the idea of a romantic story behind an old one - perhaps it was a gift from a first love. LOL, how very Edward/Bella-esque of me.

This cute red heart locket isn't vintage, but another great find from Mod Cloth.

When I was ten, I had this silver ladybug watch necklace. It was in the shape of a ladybug and you flipped the wings open to reveal the watch. I really regret letting that one go into the bin.

Luckily, watch necklaces are cropping up everywhere, I'm guessing due to the Alice in Wonderland influence. Quirky yet practical, a watch necklace would look great with a tank or a rufflely blouse.

Football. Aka soccer in North America. The sport that gave us Becks, Henry, Iker, and Ronaldo. With World Cup of Soccer fast approaching, we naturally turn our attention towards South Africa for inspiration. Ladies, I present to you Hump Day Hunks: Football Edition!

I've got to say that I've got a major crush on Brazilian Kaká; he'll be the player my eyes will be on during the World Cup. Apparently Armani agrees because he's the star of many of their ads. RAWR...

I found this hunk, Lukas Podolski, on a top 10 hottest soccer players list. He seems to like celebrating without his shirt. Good on ya, Lukas, good on ya.

OMS = Oh My Sweden. Freddie Ljungberg in one of many, many Calvin Klein ads. With all due respect to all the hot Swedish hockey players who have played on my Canucks (Matty Ohlund, Alex Edler), I think Freddie takes top honours.

There's just something incredibly foxy about France's Thierry Henry. And the man knows how to dress.

And lastly, Vanity Fair sent Annie Leibovitz to shoot some of the world's most gorgeous footballers, and they've kindly released this behind-the-scenes video for your Wednesday viewing pleasure. Make sure you watch til the end as the boys do some amazing things with their balls...

59 Bottles, Bday, and Bikinis

Hello loves! I know it's been a while since I've written. In between watching hockey and planning my Europe trip, I haven't found the time. I really wanted to take some outfit pics over the weekend but the weather wasn't cooperating.

Last week, I came into about 60 bottles of vintage wine. FOR FREE. Someone we knew (immensely wealthy, multimillionaire) just sold his mansion which had a stocked wine cellar. He doesn't actually live here, and he wanted us to get rid of his goods. So away we went and carted out boxes after boxes of wine, some dating back to the mid 80's. I'm not sure how much of it is still "good", since half of it was white wines, but I know there's definitely a bottle or two that might be worth something. I will be documenting my journey through these mystery bottles over at The Unreserved, a wine, foodie, and lifestyle publication and community (I'm one of the editors). So come check it out if you're interested. I should be posting the first bottle over the weekend.

I also had a great bday celebration on the town with my closest besties. We headed to Judas Goat, a small Spanish tapas bar with a great wine list on the recommendations from my friends at Noshwell (review here) and Senses and Style. It didn't disappoint, and we were fully stuffed. I didn't take very good pictures but here's a sampling of what we ate: mini bruschettas (mushrooms and melted cheese, chorizo and onion, roasted pepper), brisket meatballs with tomato sauce, slow cooked sablefish with Israeli couscous, and cured salmon pastrami.

Now something completely off-topic - my new Reef bikinis arrived! Although it hasn't exactly been beach weather here, I can't help but be excited about the two mix-and-match tops and bottoms I got (especially when I could be wearing them in the South of France...).

I got this above top but in dark purple and black so the reef label isn't quite so loud. Then the matching bottoms below but in black. In "cheeky" fit too =D.

I couldn't resist this beautiful multi-coloured triangle top - love the hippie vibe.

The detailed braiding on the sides of this pair was so unique so I picked that up too.

I bought everything from Spyder Surf and they were great about the order. I was a bit apprehensive about ordering swimwear online but everything turned out great! I can't wait to test them out, even if I have to wear them underneath my thick "seal suit" (aka wetsuit) when I'm in Tofino in a couple of weeks.

Hump Day Hunks: Sweet 16 Edition

It was Spring 1994. Vancouver Canucks magic was in the air as our team headed for the Stanley Cup playoffs final. Our team had done the impossible, playing the underdog and beating out all other teams in the Western Conference. I remember being at the series clinching Game 5 that put us into the finals - oh how sweet it was. And there was none sweeter than #16, captain of the Canucks, Trevor Linden.

I owe this Hump Day Hunks Sweet 16 edition to my good friend Melissa. I promised to do it for Trevor's birthday (a couple of weeks ago) but I was away so didn't get to it. She is his biggest fan. EVER. She still sleeps in a Linden night shirt, even after all these years. Even as his boyish cute looks have been chiseled away to a bearded, rugged handsomeness. He came to this city a boy, and we watched him grow into a man.

We used to see Trevor and current Canucks captain Roberto Luongo nearly every week at a sandwich shop the last year of Trevor's career. They would often say hello, smile at us, or say goodbye. One time I almost collided right into him with my pile of forks, straws, and napkins. I'm sure I would have been knocked down and out of breath, and I just about died of embarrassment.

Trevor's come a long way since donning this Canadian tuxedo. From the times I've seen him in person, I can say he's one of the best dressed Canucks. Slim cut cardigans and sweaters, dress shirts, or designer track jackets. His jeans fit him really nicely too =D.

So, as the Canucks play tonight against the LA Kings in a pivotal game, let us find inspiration from our Hump Day Hunk. Trevor's given us his heart and soul and let's hope the current Canucks can also find that in themselves tonight. GO CANUCKS GO!!!

Love Like a Sunset

It's my last day in Hong Kong. The weather finally let up so I was able to sneak in a few photies of my finds. I've been very focused on ticking off the items I wanted off the Hit Lists - and then some =D.

Style wise, this trip has been inspiring. The people here really know how to dress and seamlessly blend the latest trends into something wearable. It's definitely going to push my personal sartorial boundaries. Some of my past fears, like harem pants, crazy prints, and bright colours, have been conquered.

I'm sad to leave but there's also so much to look forward to. The Canucks are starting the first round of the playoffs against the LA Kings, and I've got a surf weekend break soon. I can't wait to try out my new board!

And leaving Asia behind, I've got Europe to look ahead to. Official planning starts when I get home! Any advice please on shopping, eating, staying in Paris, Stockholm, Copenhagen, and Amsterdam is appreciated.

Thoroughly Bred

I took some quick snaps yesterday before I headed out to watch horse racing at the Happy Valley Racetrack in Hong Kong. I forgot to show you my new mini purse, tiny like the one I posted about before. I found this Japanese label called Ambient, and I've been stocking up on some not-some-basic basics. *Warning* long post!

Like this pair of paneled, stretchy riding pants. And these cuffed platform Elizabeth and James-ish booties. Both by Ambient.

For such a simple outfit, normally I would play up the accessories. Since I'm away, I didn't bring much. I did spice things up with my custom made, perfectly round shades (kinda like these Lanvin sunnies that I coveted). If you look closely, the frame looks as though it was made from dark grained wood. My lovely friends at Fox Optical were kind enough to create this one-of-a-kind piece for me.

There's also a lovely story behind my new coral with yellow and white diamonds ring, from my mother. I'll have to save that for another post.

Now, on to the horse racing. We had the corporate box through my dad, and we enjoyed a full dinner buffet. Some of the dishes included tandoori salmon, curry lamb, roast pork loin, and coconut prawns. It was delicious.

We were taken down to the concourse level for one of the races. We got to watch the horses warm up; it was awesome to see them so up close. Then, we watched the race right next to the track at the finish line. As the horses thundered towards the finish line, the level of excitement from the crowd was deafening. I couldn't get any pictures of the horses as they were going so fast. All I know is I would give just about anything to have a go around the track full steam on a thoroughbred. I'll just have to imagine that the next time I ride around the track at Southlands.

We came home with our tummies full and pockets empty since none of us won on our bets. I took some videos of the race and warm-up below. Please excuse the crappy music - I don't have any music here with me.

HK Hist List 3: One Leg at a Time

Hi loves!! I've arrived in Hong Kong so wanted to squeeze in a quickie before heading out. The weather here is crappy but I'm hoping it turns around soon because I'm taking a riding lesson tomorrow at the Clearwater Bay Equestrian Centre! I'm sooo pumped - it's one of the few private barns on Hong Kong (most of the others are run by the Jockey Club) and it's supposed to be fancy. My niece is just starting to ride so we'll be heading out together. I also hit up a few stores yesterday - including Burberry (badly wanted one of the trenches from Spring 2010 but no small sizes left), agnes b (sorry I'm missing the accent aigu) and Anna Sui.

Hit List 3 comes a little late since I already started checking it off the list within my 24 hours of arriving. Because I'm short, I have a hard time finding great fitting pants. Now that I'm back amongst a population where everyone else is my size, I need to shop for pants!

I'm loving anything that's tapered and slightly baggier around the waist. Khaki pants haven't been on my list for a while but it's back big time this spring with military/safari inspired looks. And a grey pair of tapered pants will go with just about anything in my closet.

HK Hit List 2: Beyond Basics

Happy weekend, my friends! Thank you so much for all your well wishes and I'm feeling a lot better than I was a few weeks ago. Thank goodness because I'm flying to Hong Kong next week.

I have a lot of trendy things in my closet, and I think it's about time I stock up on some basics. Well, not totally plain stuff but classics like tees, hoodies and shift dresses, kicked up a notch.

I have lots of tees but I'm looking for more deconstructed ones with slightly different shapes.

Hump Day Hunks is Back! Chef's Edition

A few of you have been asking for your Hump Day Hunks - I'm so sorry to make you wait! And this week, I must say it's a delicious assortment. It's often said a way to a man's heart is through his stomach, and I think that goes for the ladies as well! As suggested by foodie Teresa at Senses and Style, I present to you Hump Day Hunks: Chefs Edition.

Montreal chef Chuck Hughes, star of Food Network's Chuck's Day Off, is just oozing Hump Day hotness. Look at those tats and his confident smile! Yummy.

I must say, I never thought I would have put our next Hunk on this list. From what I remember of him on the show The Main, he was a somewhat chubby guy. When I found out he had slimmed down his physique and toughened up that baby face with some man-whiskers, I changed my mind promptly. Unfortunately, he's recently left the newly opened Corner Suite Bistro, so no chances for you ladies to spot (or stalk) him there.

Erin of Haus of Hybrid hasn't always agreed with me on my Hump Day choices (see what she had to say on my NHL Hunks edition), so this one's for her. Italian stallion David Rocco charms us with his easy going style while cooking up any girl's culinary fantasy.

Our next hottie is a personal favourite - there's just something so wholesomely sexy about David Lieberman. He seems so clean cut, nice, and a bit goofy; makes you wonder if he can get a little dirty (while cooking - what were you thinking?). Admittedly, his food doesn't look the best, but who cares?

Of course, I have to pay homage to the original chef cutie, Jamie. Yes, you've gained a few pounds since you first burst onto the cooking scene with your bashed-up mint and pukka pineapple. But your heroic efforts to make humanity eat more decently and your schoolboy charm still do it for me.

HK Hit List

Hi friends! Hope you all had a great St. Patrick's Day. I've been MIA lately and it's because I've been quite sick. This past weekend I did little other than sleep. I was very sick only a couple of weeks ago. I never quite got over it so here I go again. I'm starting to get better but I'm still a ways off from getting back to normal.

I really need to get well soon because in about 2 weeks time I'm flying to Hong Kong for a quick holiday. I need to muster up all my energy so I can be a super aunt to my niece and baby nephew, plus do a ton of shopping!

Like my trip last year, I'm putting together my HK Hit List over the next 2 weeks to show you what kind of things I'm on the hunt for.

So first up on the HK Hit list: Mega Platforms

Ever since clogs graced the Chanel runway, I knew they would be a hit. This Elizabeth and James mule-like pair isn't quite the classic clog, but it's close enough for me.

The Secret's Out

Underground dining has taken off all around the world, and I jumped at a chance to experience it for myself when Teresa of Senses and Style asked me to go. Secret dining clubs allegedly started in San Francisco, and they're now commonplace in cities such as Paris, New York, Hong Kong, and Barcelona.

The premise is that a local chef caters a private dinner party, typically 8-12 guests, at a top secret location not to be revealed until 24 hour prior to the event. You really are at the mercy of the chef - there's no guessing what the menu nor the company will be.

When hubby and I arrived at the address, I must say I was a bit anxious. In an age where technology often trumps mystery, it was very refreshing to go in blindfolds. Too often we check out Urban Spoon before we hit up a new restaurant. And hasn't Google streetview to an extent killed the beauty of a surprise? The idea of not knowing, and ultimately giving up control, added to the allure of secret dining.

Overall, I enjoyed the food and the intimate atmosphere (you are after all, at the chef's home). I would say the food was well prepared; it was quite tasty.

I would say if one was traveling to a great culinary capital, oh say, like Paris, it would be very worthwhile to source out a secret spot. It's a great way to eat like a local, and well, eat amongst them too.

I'll be packing my bags and heading on a jet plane a couple of times over the next few months. First up, Hong Kong in April to see my family and newborn nephew. When the summer hits, I am going to Europe!! I've never been to Paris and it'll be a dream come true to finally go.

Pack in between a surf weekend to Tofino and I've got plenty to look forward to.

Won't You Let Your Red Heart Show

So it's all over. In just over two weeks, the world came and saw the best of what Vancouver and Canada has to offer. It's strange being back to the usual schedule of things, without the constant buzz on the streets just outside my office. No more random high fives, stranger hugs, and serendipitous choruses of the national anthem on public transit. The Olympics are over.

Over the past 2 weeks, I've thought a lot about what it means to be Canadian. What does being Canadian mean to someone like me, a first-generation immigrant who has lived in 3 countries? As much as I've loved growing up here, I have conflicting feelings about this place. In some sense, I'm as Canadian as you can get - I am a hockey nut, I love the outdoors, and god do I love poutine. I grew up playing roller hockey with my friends, freezing our butts off in soccer shorts until the sun went down. On the other hand, I have roots in another culture, language and place. I love bitching about Canadian taxation, the bureaucracy, and unions. It's easy sometimes for me to pick Canada apart, just because I've lived and traveled to so many places. I know first-hand the struggle for those new to a foreign land, and I understand how hard one has to battle for every inch when you have no connections, friends, or history behind you.

Last week, I headed to Chinatown to visit my childhood doctor. Chinatown is not a place I frequent usually. It's a bit on the seedy side, although in recent months hipsters have been arriving in droves as new lounges and trendy eateries open. After the doctor visit, I went for soup noodles in the Cambodian restaurant next door (Phnom Penh, a favourite of Anthony Bourdain's). It was a family ritual when we first arrived. Whenever someone was sick, we would go in tow to the doctor's office, and thereafter, to Phnom Penh. We might complain about the "cold" Canadian weather, or argue over whether to get char siu or roast duck for dinner after.
The ability to recreate some semblance of our former lives was a way of coping with our new ones. The memories of life as a new Canadian flooded back to me.

And there, in that never ending bowl of comfort, I understood what it all meant. I realized my Canadian experience is very much a part of me. My experience as an immigrant is also uniquely Canadian. We are a country mostly made up of immigrants, and every family other than the First Nations People, can trace their roots to ancestors that first arrived here from another shore. I hold a high value on hard work and perseverance, and these same values are those that helped our Canadian athletes achieve a record high 14 gold medals at the Games. When Joannie Rochette went out there and skated her heart out for her mother, I could relate. I know how important family bonds are when you are put through the hardest of times, and sometimes, that is all you really have.

So as much as I like to search for greener pastures, Canada will always have a place in my heart. As my home even. What the Games have reminded me is to appreciate how lucky I am to have this Canadian experience. To live in this beautiful city. To know so many wonderful fellow Canadians whom I call my friends. And for that, I will proudly let my red heart show.

Hot for Hockey: Vancouver 2010 Olympic Style

A dream came true last night when I attended my first ever Winter Olympics mens hockey game. Not just any old hockey game, but for my home team: CANADA! Being the boys' first game in the tournament, I wanted to look my best decked out in our nation's colour, red.

Apologies for these photos not being the most creative but it was hard trying to get style shots in a line up of several thousand!

I broke my own rules from my piece on What Does One Wear to the Hockey Game (no skirts) as I pulled out a high-waisted, grey bandage number for the occasion. Rules are meant for breaking, right??

When the Canadian team stepped onto the ice for the pre-game warmup, the crowd went nuts with chants of "Go Canada Go!" reverberating throughout the stadium. I was especially proud when our very own Canucks goalie, Roberto Luongo, came out and played magnificently in a shut-out win.

Crosby, Toews (both Hump Day Hunks), Iginla - they were all there. In the matchup against Norway, it almost looked like an exhibition game at times of NHL all-stars on one side, and amateurs on the other.

The stadium was washed in a sea of red.

The players lined up for a hand shake at the end of the game, with Canada winning 8-0 over Norway.

It's a Beautiful Celebration!

This past weekend has been a crazy celebration fest - 2010 Winter Games starting, hubby's birthday, Valentine's Day, and Chinese New Year. I ended up partying at sold-out Molson Canadian Hockey House on Saturday and the whole city just feels like it's on a constant Olympic high. Very quietly, It's a Beautiful Life turned one a few weeks ago. I can't believe it's been over a year since I started this journey of blogging. And for my one-year blog birthday, I invited some of you to submit something beautiful and inspiring to share.

What's to come this year for It's a Beautiful Life? I am working on a new look and will soon have a new URL so I'll keep you posted. It’s difficult to articulate what inspires me. As sentimental as it sounds, any unique forms, colours, shapes, and lines would enthrall me. This affinity for design spreads to all realms such as industrial, web, fashion, food, and architecture.

Even when I was a toddler, I used my vivid imagination and crayolas to create adventures on paper. I fondly remember my inner Architect sketching out this complex multi-storey high living space…within a mountain. And you go from one floor to the next either on a slide or pole, and when you need to go up you just jump on an elevator platform. I’m sure NASA or the White House have stolen my blueprints by now for their covert operations.

But the source of where my semi creative side comes from had eluded me for awhile. A trip across the world finally brought profound answers. When I went to China, it completely enlightened me and opened my eyes to my rich history and culture; this manifested into unbelievably beautiful buildings, hidden vibrant alleyways, vivid landscapes, and smiles of long lost families and relatives. The journey to my past explained my present and inspired me to pave the way for my future.

Teresa, thank you for sharing a piece of what inspires you. Travel is one of the most amazing experiences, and I look forward to reading more about your journeys this year.

Here's my photo for your 1 yr celebration! It's a photo of me in Chiang Mai, Thailand at an elephant reserve. This photo holds a dear spot in my heart because this place was special - it wasn't your typical elephant farm peddling rides to tourists, this was a home for abused, unemployed domestic elephants. Every elephant here had a tragic story of abuse and torture and seeing them happy and healed was something I'll never forget.

Thanks J for this beautiful story. I spent nearly 3 years of my childhood in Thailand so it's a very dear place to me. For those of you interested, the reserve is called Elephant Nature Park.

Hunks of the tall and muscular variety. Accents a possibility. With less than 2 days to go, I present to you Hump Day Hunks: 2010 Olympic Games Edition.

Mizz J at Being High Maintenance, not Bitchy made me laugh when she said, "There be tall, blonde, Swedes out there!". So she was my inspiration for this next hunk, Mattias Ohlund of the Swedish national hockey team. He also played in Vancouver for a little team called the Canucks for over 10 years.

Ready, Set, Gold! T-5 to Vancouver 2010 Wnter Games

The excitement is building here in Vancouver as we are five days away to the start of the 2010 Winter Olympic Games. I've been seeing Olympic officials and athletes (that's you, Team Slovenia!) hanging around my work place hood the last few days now, and it seems everyone is sporting Olympic gear of some kind (especially those popular red Team Canada mittens).

And why not? Especially when boutiques like Aritzia are putting out super cute Olympic-licensed gear, like this faux-fur lined hoodie from the Park Life line. The first edition sold out quickly, and the new line has some awesome pieces for getting in the spirit without sacrificing style. Other highlights from the line include the retro Canada tees and tanks, and the First Nations inspired grey sweatshirt. I can't get enough of the vintage Olympic patches on my hoodie and it's sooo cuddly.

I have to give props to Team USA's gear, designed by Ralph Lauren. Sure, some of it is outrageously expensive, but if you can steal from the boys (like I did here with my boys polo), you can find bargains.

Roxy X Cynthia Rowley = Hot Surfette Style

If there's one spring/summer collabo I can't wait for, it's this Cynthia Rowley and Roxy line which will launch in March 2010.

Inspired by the surf and sea, the collection (judging by the preview) focuses on soft, muted colours in shapes that holler back in time for a 60's inspiration.

Quite different to the usual bright and loud surf wear. Most of all, I'm eager to see what the wetsuits will look like. Anything will look better than the "seal suit" I currently don for cold waters.

We Raised $10K for Hope in Haiti and We Did It In Style

Hope in Haiti was held at Barcelona Ultra Lounge this past week. How did it go? Well, from the looks on Kelsey (The Anthology), and I, it was a smashing success.

Thanks to the generosity of everyone who came out, a total of more than $10,000 was raised at the event through ticket sales, silent and live auctions, and of course from the hot Hope in Haiti tee (still on sale - contact theanthology@live.com). I paired it with a ruffle mini, slouchy boots, and a Piero Guidi handbag circa the early 90's.

The highlight of the night was no doubt a performance by Vancouver's own, WZRDZ, who energized the house with their electro beats. I was right up at the front, bopping alongside Kelly of Option 8.

There were lots of stylish bloggers in attendance, including my friends Teresa of Senses and Style and Lisa of Solo Lisa.

The awesome sister-duo, Lauren and Cara of Vincent Park, (boutique where I buy lots of great duds like this floral skirt and my motorcycle flat boots) showed their support.

I met Jordana for the first time from Being High Maintenance, Not Bitchy. I loved her time-piece necklace and grey eel-skin bag.

A big shout-out too should go to Larissa of The Extrovert, who was also behind this important fundraiser.

Hump Day Hunks: NHL Edition

Happy Hump Day Hunks! I got Hump Day started early this weekend, when I met, for the second time, the Hunk (and my crush) that started this all: Mason Raymond. He was doing an autograph signing, and when I found out, I rushed down with my Canucks jersey. The highlight was when i was chatting with him, he actually remembered meeting me last year. I've been swooning for a few days!

Since you've been waiting for this, so I've created an extra long post with some of the finest looking specimens from the NHL. Without further delay I present to you Hump Day Hunks - NHL Edition.

No list of the NHL's hottest hockey players can exist without this man, Sidney Crosby of the Pittsburgh Penguins. The youngest man to ever captain a team to a Stanley Cup, this hottie will also lead Team Canada to 2010 Olympic glory.

Vancouver ladies are still pining for Blue Eyes Taylor Pyatt who used to play for our home team. Luckily he plays for Phoenix which means us westcoast girls can fawn all over him when he rolls into town to play.

I didn't know who this cutie was but he showed up on some list of the hottest hockey players. Thank Google for Rick DiPietro, goalie for the NY Islanders.

It's a shame goalies wear full face masks, especially since so many of them are blessed in the looks department. Our next hunk, Swede Henrik Lundqvist of the NY Rangers, may wear a mask but we know what's smouldering underneath.

He looks like a baby JT - it's Jonathan Toews of the Chicago Blackhawks. I have such a soft spot for him, even though his Hawks are big rivals to my Canucks.

This next hunk played for my Canucks, and I didn't even know that until some friends of mine met him at a team charity function and their jaws dropped to the floor. Rob Davison, now of the San Jose Sharks,may not get much ice-time, but he gets plenty of attention on Hump Day Hunks.

We all love a man who can rock a suit, and I say Zach Parise of the New Jersey Devils shows us how it's done.

Kauai Krush - Part 2

How do I love Kauai? In so many ways...

I love the delicious, locally-handmade ice cream from Lappert's. Look at that big smile on my face! Here I am enjoying their famous and most popular flavour, Kauai Pie (Kona coffee, macadamia nuts, shredded and lightly toasted coconut, and dark chocolate fudge). My fave flavour, though, is Heavenly Hana, which is chocolate ice cream with swirls of marshmallow ribbon, white chocolate covered macadamia nuts, dark chocolate covered almond chunks, chocolate bits, and roasted almonds. That's my kind of heaven.

With all the eating, hubby and I had to do some work to burn those calories off. And by work, I mean adventuring - by sea and by land. We went diving together for the first time. Our guides from Fathom Five were wonderful. Even though we were not certified, we did a shore dive of 40 feet and saw tons of fish and even a large sea turtle.

We also made use of the awesome mountain bikes that came with our cottage and did some exploring around some unused sugarcane roads. They led us to a very deserted beach, called Gillin's beach after the fella who lived there. The area is comprised of three bays which make up the Mala'ulepu Beaches, famous for breathtaking scenery and the lithified sand cliffs that may be explored by foot, bike or horse.

While we were in the south, we drove up to the Waimea Canyon for some hiking and spectacular views. Called the Grand Canyon of the Pacific, it did not disappoint. From this vista we peered down to the Kalalau Valley. Even from that distance we could see massive 30 foot waves pummeling the north shore. If you are familiar with Kauai, you'll know that the west and the north side of the island don't connect by road or anything other than by sea. It's because of this vast valley and the muddy swamps within. Attempts to build a road to circumvent the island have failed in the past, and thank goodness for that. Seeing the valley and the Na Pali coast from this side was especially special because two years ago when hubby and I were in Kauai for the first time, we did a fantastic hike through the Kalalau Trail (a highly difficult trail). It was cool to see it from a different vantage point.

As our days in the south drew to an end, we began our drive up to the rugged north, and to one of my favourite places in the world. We stopped for a drink in the posh Princeville resort area, and ended up at the St. Regis Hotel lounge on their deck. The view was just perfect.

As much as I loved the south, I was ready to head north for some surfing. I absolutely adore the north and it felt a bit like coming home. Up next, a review of a place so dear to my heart: the Kauai North Shore.

Hope In Haiti Fundraiser

We've all seen the devastation that's hit Haiti over the past week. It's heart wrenching. I don't usually blog a lot about events or do a lot of promotion but this is a very worthy cause.

Helping my friends Kelsey (of The Anthology), and Larissa (of The Extrovert), I'm spreading the word about the Hope in Haiti benefit taking place this Wednesday, January 27 at the Barcelona Nightclub in Vancouver. All proceeds go to the Canadian Red Cross. I will be in attendance as well, helping out where I can.

Not only is this a very meaningful event, but there will be some fantastic door prizes and items up for auction. Is It Summer Yet?

How was your weekend, lovelies? Mine was good; lots of chilling out with a movie and take-in dinner (District 9 and sushi), dinner party at a friend's (yummy slow braised beef short ribs papparadelle), and coffee and crepes on Sunday.

I know I just got back from a beach holiday, but I'm already itching to go somewhere hot again. How can I not with all these sizzling hot resort styles tempting me? I've decided that 2010 is the year that I will get a real classic Brazilian bikini, and I've been enticed by some of the hot looks from Look Swimwear. Of course, I also love the Reef swimwear that makes your butt look so good. So, if you're going somewhere hot soon for a mid-winter break, I envy you.

While I was surfing for hot bikinis, Teresa from Senses and Style pointed me to Anna Kosturova, a local Vancouver swimwear designer. Her designs have been featured in Sports Illustrated and Lucky Magazine, and they are sexy yet classy. I wish I had known before I went to Kauai!

So, while everyone is thinking of the 2010 Winter Olympics, happening in my humble town in less than 4 weeks time, I've got beaches and bikinis on the brain.

Kauai Krush - Part 1

I gotta say, this first week back was tough. It's been just over a week since I got back from Kauai. I'm poring over my photos and remembering how easy it was to spring out of bed everyday to watch the Hawaiian sun rise. I think my Facebook status on the first morning said it all: "I woke up in paradise". (Please note this is going to be a long post...).

We started our trip with a few days on the south side of the island where we were to spend Christmas. The cottage that we rented did not fall short of expectations: it was an immaculate, dream beach house of white clapboard, rafter ceilings, and double french doors that let in the ocean breeze. We had every comfort of home and no detail was spared. We received a large box of chocolates on our bed upon arrival, and there were hand-made scented candles throughout the house to create a romantic atmosphere. An ipod docking station allowed us to blast Vampire Weekend, Jack Johnson, and Buena Vista Social Club throughout the day. There was a gourmet kitchen with every possible tool a chef would need. A separate laundry room overlooked the lush back garden and a view to the ocean. The garage was full of toys like mountain bikes and snorkeling gear for us to use.

Our days consisted of a morning activity, a late lunch either made at home or takeout at a local hole-in-the-wall, a short siesta on the lanai (deck) to stay out of mid-day sun, and an afternoon activity. A late afternoon swim at nearby Kiahuna beach, right by the Sheraton Hotel, was a ritual. On most nights, hubby grilled delicious fresh fish (mahi mahi, ono, or ahi), chicken or steaks on the BBQ for dinner. We actually only ate dinner out twice (once when we first arrived late that night and once on Christmas eve) because we loved cooking at our cottage so much.

We made fresh OJ from the ripe oranges that came from the backyard tree. There were local avocados as large as half my head that came from the neighour's yard which we happily made into guacamole. After our lazy afternoon swims, we kept busy with eating crisps and drinking the local brew on the lanai while we watched the sun wane.

I once tried to start an all-girl band with my bestie. We both had Fender stratocasters, and we tried to teach ourselves to play. We were both drummers too so we figured we could definitely rock it out at the next Lollapalooza as riot grrls. Our repertoire consisted of a handful of Hole (Live Through This, especially Doll Parts), Nirvana, Veruca Salt and Smashing Pumpkins songs.

Well, needless to say, we never hit the top 20 but I did make time to drop this random album. "Do it All the Same" by Waipati River.

Hump Day Hunks - Surfer Edition

It's Wednesday! Due to popular demand, Hump Day Hunks is back. My last post, starring my crush from the Vancouver Canucks, Mason Raymond, and team mate Alex Burrows, was thoroughly enjoyed so I'm making it a regular feature. Since I just got back from Hawaii, it's only fitting that today's edition will feature those gorgeous water gods otherwise known as surfers.

Hang Ten for Twenty-Ten

I'm back! Happy new year to all of you lovelies - did you miss me? I hope you all had a wonderful time over the holidays. I took LOTS of photos in Hawaii (some as per your recommendations) so will be sharing with you soon. There was a new adventure everyday - scuba diving, surfing, off-road biking and of course lots of eating. There was even some dancing at a dive bar! I've posted a sneak peak below.

While I was away, I reflected on the past year and also quietly celebrated hubby and I's ten year anniversary (this includes our dating life). Where has the time gone? We rang in the new year in style at the St. Regis Princeville Hotel in Kauai (aka "Castle on the Cliff" by me and "The St. Outrageously Expensive" by hubby) with a 2-night stay. Champers, room service and two movies - it was just perfect.

2010 is going to a milestone year. It's a Beautiful Life will be celebrating a first birthday in the next few weeks and I'll be marking a big birthday. I'm also starting a new project as a lead blogger so more on that to come. It's going to be great!

Meanwhile, a selection of sun, surf and sand below. *sigh* all I can think about is surfing again...

Bon Voyage

Sitting here at the Seattle airport with a moment to blog before my flight to Hawaii. It's been a hectic few months and I can't tell you how happy and free i feel.

In the past few months, I've been working on inverted (upside down) poses at my anusara yoga class. I was petrified when the instructor told us the first time we were going to do them. There was something about the uncertainty of it, and the fear of falling that I didn't want to confront.

We built up to it slowly. We did lots of push-ups and downward dogs to get strong and deeply rooted down into the earth. We practiced kicking up against the wall to get a feel for being upside down.

When I finally managed it (with the help of a partner - I can't hand stand yet on my own), it was strangely calming and exhilarating at the same time. It was addictive. I loved the feeling of finding stillness in a pose that could be so unstable, and it was as much of a mental challenge as a physical one.

What I take away from it is, well, a lot. I learned that things I told myself I couldn't do, I could do. I learned that in unstable and uncertain situations, one could still find stillness and grounding. I learned that if I came crashing down, I could be ok. I learned to let go and play.

I wish you all a wonderful time over the Christmas holidays and Santa's good to you. I'll try to blog whenever I can in between surfing, eating, sleeping, and all that other goodness life has to offer.

What Does One Wear to the Hockey Game?

Happy weekend my friends! Sorry for disappearing on you for over a week; I've been extremely busy so haven't had time to catch up.

I went to the Canucks game last night and enjoyed the view from row EIGHT - that's super close to the ice for those of you who have not been to a hockey game. Close enough to see my crush smile or grimace although certainly not as close as the time that I met him *major heart palpitations* in a pizzeria.

That got me thinking about ideal outfits to wear to a hockey game...

Now wearing your team's hockey jersey or tee in a mini size is perfectly acceptable as long as it's paired with nice fitting jeans (nothing too slouchy and none of those awful pink Canucks jerseys - yuck). However, if you feel like something else, or you're like me and believe your jersey is jinxed, you might want to try some of these cozy sweater/leggings/boot combos.

I'm not a believer of wearing skirts or dresses to games - it's not too handy for walking up and down stairs. Plus the risk of beer spillage, ketchup squirts, and other messy rink foods (from yourself or others) makes it not worth it. Skinny jeans and leggings are the way to go.

As for my feet, I prefer a flat tall boot (motorcycle or equestrian). A small heel is a good option too, especially if you go with booties. I don't like wearing spiky stilettos or anything too femme fatale, and certainly not open-toed shoes!

Coconuts and Christmas

In just over two weeks, I'll be jetting off to the lovely island of Kauai for some Christmas cheer on the beach. Really, badly need this.

Hubby and I have rented two cottages - one in the north and one in the south side of the island to hedge our bets for best weather and surf.

Back in the Saddle

Happy (Black) Friday and weekend, mes amis! I've successfully made it through most of today without buying ANYTHING online even though I've been so tempted by all the black Friday deals. I just about hit Checkout on the pair of Lanvin sunglasses that I've been eyeing for months now but I remembered that I'm going to the FreshOut sale tomorrow and also, I need to keep some money around because I'm finally back in the saddle again.

I haven't ridden regularly since the pony I was leasing, Miss Fancy, was sold (see me and Miss Fancy at a horse show here, riding on the beach here, and some more jumping action here). I tried out several horses, and the pictures you see here is a horse that I did not end up taking. She was a real cutie pie with the prettiest eyes.

Up next I tried a dark Warmblood gelding named Ned. My hubby found a note on my desk which I had doodled hubby's name and also "Ned" with hearts all over. He said, "LIVIE! Who's Ned?". Hee hee.

Third time was the charm and I found my match. My new horse is called Sandra Dee (Sandy), and she's another chestnut mare. She's a Holsteiner/Thoroughbred cross, and I'm starting next weekend. I can't wait!

All this means I need some new (stylish) winter riding clothes. Like the cozy Gersemi puffy coat below.

I am kinda in love with this tacky and ever so slightly cheesy horse printed fleece by Outback Trading. I think it can look kinda cool in an ugly sweater sort of way.

The Eyes of the Tiger

Thank goodness my online shopping is limited to smaller ticket items, because if I could, I would be biding on some of these intricate pieces from the Dupuis Fine Jewelery Auction. Imagine the rush of winning one of these treasures, and the look of surprise I might find on my hubby's face!

Before I go and swoon all over these, I want to give a shout-out to my friend Deanne over at Dream Sequins. She invited me, along with her many stylish blogger friends, to be a guest of her tea party. See what I wore and what others have to say in her post here.

Now on with the swooning: I nearly gasped when I saw this on the cover of the auction book. What's not to love about an 18K golden tiger bangle with emerald eyes? Yellow diamonds and black onyx completed his coat. Very fierce and sold for a some chump change, $160K worth of change.

If I could have bidded, it would have been this archaeological revival necklace of gold and lapis lazuli. It's dated circa 1880. Sold for $4000.

I don't have my ears pierced (I can't) but the below pair of coral and diamond earrings would be my choice if I did. Since you can't (and shouldn't) buy coral for obvious reasons, it makes the vintage pair below quite a find.

I have a soft spot for emeralds being Taurus and all (my birthstone), and this late 19th century Belle Époque brooch would satisfy any girl's emerald fix. That gem is over FIVE carats, mounted in platinum and 18K gold. A diamond floral design surrounds this green gem, and the pin sold for a cool 65K.

My last pick is not only beautiful but functional. A very practical art deco emerald and diamond wristwatch, circa 1920. Sale price not listed.

The Most Glamorous Wedding Favour Boxes Ever

When I planned my wedding, I had a hard time figuring out how to package the custom chocolates I ordered. I ended up ordering some Chinese take-out boxes online and tried my best to dress them up with pink ribbons (not very well). If only I had something like the beautiful favour boxes by Tulle Box Designs.

Tulle Box Designs is created by my good friend Maxine, and she recently launched a new website. We had a chance to chat about her company and her thoughts on upcoming wedding trends. Her passion and knowledge for all things weddings really shines, and it shows in her unique and beautiful products.

1. Tell me about Tulle Box Designs. What do you do?

Tulle Box Designs makes handmade, lush, and beautiful wedding favour packaging. At weddings, favours are typically placed on the table, and I'm a huge believer that everything that sits on guest tables should be really really pretty--whether it's the flowers, the centerpieces, or the favours.

2. What is the inspiration behind Tulle Box Designs?

I have quite the collection of wedding magazines, and Tulle Box Designs is really inspired by all the beautifully-detailed weddings in those magazines. I am constantly inspired by these details, like a gorgeous monogram, beautiful baskets holding colourful pashminas, vintage birdcages, and antique brooches, to name a few.

3. For your own wedding, you had a gorgeous traditional church ceremony and then a grand reception dinner at the Westin. Tell me more about the decorations and themes you chose, and what were some of your favourite pieces.

For my own wedding, I wanted an old-world and elegant feel. The guest tables were dressed in antique gold silk table linens, tall candelabras, and antique-looking frames for table numbers. One of my favourite pieces were my favours. They were boxes of tea which were dressed with a handmade green-tea coloured peony and tied with chocolate ribbon.

4. Of the designs you offer, which is your favourite?

My favourite one is the mille-feuille garden rose--they remind me of petit-fours and that makes me happy. =)

5. What are the top wedding trends upcoming for 2010 in terms of style and decor? Are we seeing anything new or drastically different?

We are seeing many brides adorn feathered and/or jeweled hairpieces. I think they look so beautiful and I would LOVE to see bridesmaids adorn hairpieces too. Even a string of pearls weaved through a chignon is so elegant. The 2010 bridal season is one of my favourites. The wedding gowns are so ethereal and airy. They really make brides look like they're walking on clouds. Colour-wise, I think we'll see more soft, muted colour palettes like grays and really soft yellows. For decor, i can see lots of one-of-a-kind decor pieces from antique stores and flea markets.

6. Who are your favourite wedding gown designers?

This is hard! There are SOOO many wedding gown designers that I LOVE. Okay, but if I had to narrow it down, it'd be Vera Wang, Judd Waddell, Amsale, Monique L'huillier, Reem Acra, and Melissa Sweet.

7. Who did you wear at your own wedding?

An antique ivory silk Judd Waddell ballgown. The skirt was huge, and underneath the silk were layers and layers of tulle that made me want to twirl all night. Dress was paired with silver d'orsay Manolo Blahniks with rhinestone buckles.

Epic Party in Vancity

Last Friday, I had a blast at the birthday and housewarming party of the lovely Allie from Vancity Allie. The cocktail party was EPIC! Since Allie is both a mixmaster of cocktails and a superb chef, it was a real treat. Check out her pictures here; warning though as it may make you hungry and thirsty.

I had no idea what to wear up until Friday. Would it be my princess-y Betsey Johnson pink dress? Or maybe my new grey Built by Wendy sweater dress? I made a mad shopping dash at lunch and found this studded black bustier at one of my fave shops. I knew I had a few different mini skirts that would go with it (like the Diesel faux leather number below) but I needed something to keep me warm.

That's when I found this faux fur cropped jacket at H&M. I picked up some curly lucky bamboo as a gift and I was set to go.

At the party, I got to hang out with Raul from HummingBird604 (picture below), and met Richard from Canucks Hockey Blog and Greg of On the Rant Again (bottom picture). Lots of fun!

This week, I've got another horse to try and a nice dinner date to look forward to. I'll have some pictures from last week's horse trial up soon I promise!

Cozy Up to Colour

As the weather gets chillier, I'm reaching into my closet more and more for sweater coats and warm cardigans. I realized that I have a lot of sweaters in creams, greys and blacks but I am suffering from a lack of colour.

I'm sitting here on a Sunday afternoon, with most of my chores done. I've got a nice beef bourguignon going in the slow cooker. I was sorely disappointed that I didn't get out to see this horse yesterday as planned. For those of you that don't know, I haven't been riding actively the past 3 months (hence the lack of horsey photos lately) because Miss Fancy was sold. I was sad to see her go but it was imminent. On the bright side, I have started to slowly look for another horse and I am finally looking at something this week. I can't wait! Pics to come.

I've put together some things I'm obsessed with lately. I'd love to get my hands on the Knockout Matte nailpolishes (shown in highest picture, in Concrete and Pool). I've never been much of a hand polish wearer because of the horses, but for some reason, I think the matte finish might hold up better.

I'm also loving the leather Michael Kors gloves with the zippers, and this tweed dress from Shop Cuffs.

I'm seeing more girls sporting the Aigle rubber riding boots as an alternative to the Hunters wellies, and I think they are super cute. For town only though, as I would never give up real leather riding boots in the ring!

In this case, it might be a very good thing. All my life I've wanted a Chanel handbag. And now it's within my grasp.

But what do I go for? The classic quilted handbag with chain strap?

The oversized and practical tote?

Or the updated electric version of a classic?

I don't think I can go wrong, but your thoughts are welcome.

Some snaps from my night out on Halloween. I ended up going to a haunted house event at the local amusement park fair and had fun screaming my head off.

I ended up going as a pirate wench but to my dismay, the mini pirate skull hat did not stay put on my head. The good thing about this getup is it can double as a vampire costume next year. Or just whenever I feel like it.

Death by Diamonds and Pearls

Happy Halloween weekend, mes amis! I have so much blogging to catch up on, and the story of my life right now is just work, work, and more work. It will get better. Last weekend, I went to a Fall fair held by an upper crust private school. It's known for the great silent auction items as well as second hand (or pre-loved) fashions. I picked up some bargains: a beautiful silver sequined clutch for $4, 2 scarves for $2 and an ugly-cute handbag for $2. I can't wait to show them. I also bid on a pair of Olympic hockey tickets for 2010 but I didn't get it.

And tomorrow night, I actually have Halloween plans to go out for the first time in probably 8 years! I kid you not. I'll be hanging out with the uber stylish Teresa from Senses and Style, fresh from her Europe trip. She even picked up a couple of gorg scarves from Italy for me (I will post, but sneak peek at her blog). I can't wait to go out in my costume...it's not quite as hot as the Nutcracker getup but it's not a bad last minute replacement. We'll be doing the haunted house thing, having some drinks and dinner, and then who knows?

For now, an outfit post from a couple of weeks ago. I got this plaid shirt from Vincent Park and I love how I can dress it up with a satin pencil skirt or make it preppy countryside with jeans and my beloved Ilse Jacobsen wellies.

Halloween Hotness

No, not that kind. I mean, not the dress-up-as-skanky-as-possible looks. When it comes to Halloween costumes, it's sometimes easy to go from looking like the lady of the night to a lady of the night.

I've picked out a few that I love. First up, is the stylish yet adorable Nutcracker. If I were dressing up, this would be my first choice. Not only because that military/marching band jacket look is super in right now, but I've always wanted to wear a big furry hat.

As an equestrian, of course I love this dressage-inspired look. I'd carry a longer whip though!

And I give top marks to Gwen for just having fun with her fried egg look below. It's quirky, kinda nerdy and totally cute.

Some other ideas I love but didn't find any pictures worthy to post are: Mystique from X-Men, a dead ballerina and thanks to my friend Amanda, a fallen/dead trapeze artist.

Dead Leaves And The Dirty Ground

I love the colour of the trees now that autumn has fully arrived. They're orange and red and purple and yellow...all the pretty bright colours straight out of a crayola box. I keep wanting to take pictures, but I'm always afraid they won't turn out as beautiful as I can remember them.

Last weekend when it was rainy and miserable out, we made lamb shanks simmered with red wine in the slow cooker (recipe as a guideline here, though we didn't follow it exactly). The first real robust, hearty meal this fall/winter. The meat was fall-off-the-bone tender and the carrots and parsnips soft and sweet. A perfect meal for a cozy dine-in night.

Equally cozy is my emerald green velvet blazer. I almost binned this in the donor dump last year, but I dug it out back from the closet grave and gave it new life. The details on it are amazing: ruffled edged pockets (you can't see here) and a velvet sash that is lined with satin on the inside.

Crossing Over to the (Dark) Vintage Side

Remember when I did a post about a new vintage era possibly starting in my closet, as inspired by blogger friends who rock the vintage look? Well, here is my first vintage piece on It's a Beautiful Life. Mom was in town a few weeks ago and we were digging through her closet of unwanteds. Hanging by its lonely self was this very rock-star worthy, blue houndstooth blazer by Escada. The shoulders were all 80's, perhaps late eighties, and the cut was custom tailored for my little momma. Oh how I love the velvet trim: makes me feel like rockstar royalty.

What's even better, is knowing that this piece was given to my mom from one of her best friends. This lady is extremely wealthy, and also once bought me my first concert tickets (NKOTB baby!). And I think she'll be very happy to know I'm now wearing her gift.

By the way, a mutual friend of The Anthology and I, says vintage must be 25 years or older. Now according to that rule, my piece wouldn't be classified as vintage. What do you guys think? Does clothing have to be older than 25 years to gain the title vintage?

2 Postcards and Said the Whale

This is long overdue - I received postcards from two very lovely, wonderful people a few weeks ago and now I've finally gotten around to posting the pictures. Firstly, I took part in the cool Postcard Exchange that Deanne from Dream Sequins so kindly organized. For sending a postcard each these two awesome bloggers, I in return got two cards in the mail. And here's what I got:

The top card is of course New York, from Deanne. I absolutely love her blog - she had awesome coverage of NYFW and love her profiles of hot designers and bloggers.

The second card I got was super cute - it is from Alicia from Crossing Over to the Dark Side. Great collection of inspiring photos and images.

I know i haven't had too many posts lately - but I will do some outfit posts over the weekend and in the upcoming week. Things have just been crazy with the teaching gig and I'm really looking forward to this weekend!

Totally unrelated is what's playing alot in my iPhone/Pod/Tunes these days - Said the Whale. They're a great little band from Vancouver, and their tunes are keeping me upbeat and in good company for those long nights working away. My faves right now are Howe Sound and Camilo (The Magician).

Chanel Spring 2010

Happy Thanksgiving to all my Canadian readers! I'm squeezing in a quick blog post here before I jet off for a family turkey dinner. I saw this gorgeous Spring 2010 Chanel RTW show posted on Style.com and I wanted to share some of my favourite looks with you. I must say sadly I currently own no Chanel items other than makeup, but a watch and classic quilted handbag is most definitely on my list!

Karl Lagerfield created a collection for a youthful, coquettish kind of girl. The setting was a country barn where models walked across a hay-strewn floor, looking slightly devious. The clothes were for the upscale girl gone country, perhaps out for a romp and a roll about in the French countryside.

The classic tweed skirt-and-jacket sets were there, in nude and beige shades (very on-trend) but in very short cuts (also very on-trend). I was crazy about the clunky clogs and wedge heels, as well as the criss-crossed hosery.

I loved the fun and slightly naughty spirit of the collection, and these are clothes that I would love to have in my closet. I also really enjoyed the fuller shapes of the dresses, which further highlighted a narrow waistline.

The two looks below remind me a little Kirsten Dunst's world in Marie Antoinette - completely sugary and frivolous, but just the kind of eye candy I love.

Cherry-Topped Sunday

Hope everyone had a great weekend! I'm still catching up and last week has been busy. I've taken on a part-time role (in addition to my day job) teaching e-business and marketing at a fashion design program, so things aren't going to slow down. The good news is, I think we're less than 12 weeks away to Christmas (yay Hawaii!). So please bear with me.

With all the excitement, I'm sure glad last weekend I got to take it easy and splurge at the Four Seasons in Whistler. After a day of mountain biking, I swam a few laps in the heated outdoor pool, jumped in the hot tub, and then sunned myself poolside before hitting the spa (can you believe this is possible in the alpines at the end of September?). There was no better way to top off the day then to head out to the highly celebrated Bearfoot Bistro (not to be confused with this other Bear in Tofino). Award-winning head chef Melissa Craig and her crew did not disappoint.

Our epicurean journey began with an amuse bouche consisting of shrimp, wasabi mayo, and pesto.

A very elegant heirloom tomato and smoked black cod salad was my appetizer. It was served with balsamic vinegar beads, dill, and olive oil powder. Simply incredible.

A lovely 2004 pinot noir from Foxtrot Winery in Naramata, BC. filled our mouths with juicy berries, hints of chocolate and caramel, and warmed our hearts.

My father ordered the whole Dover sole which was served tableside with the bones removed exquisitely by the server. The citrus beurre-blanc were to die for!

I savoured a red piece of tenderloin, served with shaved foie gras butter in a miniature pan.

But best of all, the cherry topper on a perfectly indulgent Sunday, was the dessert. Bearfoot Bistro offers their "Nitro Ice-Cream for 2" where the ice-cream is churned by hand at your table with the help of some patented liquid nitrogen (hence the smoke below).

It's served with all the toppings needed for the ultimate sundae: brandied cherries, whipped cream, caramel and chocolate sauces, crunchy chocolate pearls, and nuts. I would go back just for this!!

After the ice-cream, we got a personal tour of their very large wine cellar. We saw a Magnum of Opus One in there!

And yes, I did get to lick that wooden spoon afterwards, hence my very satisfied expression below.

Playing Paparazzi at BC Fashion Week

Hello readers, I am back! It's been a few days away from blogging as I took some time off to breathe in the mountain air at Whistler. I've got lots of catching up to do, so let's get started with last night, when I attended the BC Fashion Week opening show with Kelsey at The Anthology. The featured designer was Jacqueline Conoir, and the show was held at a sleek new club called Fortune Sound Club in dicey Chinatown (for my non-Vancouver friends, our Chinatown is rather drug-ridden and full of the homeless but is slowly changing into the latest It neighborhood). It had all the proper edge and chic one would expect at a fashion show.

The show was jam-packed, and I tried my best to play paparazzi. Being small is definitely a disadvantage when it comes to runway photography!

My favorite photo was unrelated to what was happening on the runway, but rather when supermodel and runway coach Stacey McKenzie posed for my camera in an impromptu moment (seen above). She's absolutely stunning in person and commands an amazing presence.

The show itself was alright, not really my style but I was happy to be there to soak in the atmosphere. Conoir's 2010 Spring collection featured mostly structured business wear, accented by some swingy tops and dresses. My favorite part of the collection was the long evening dresses, some in psychedelic prints and others in bridal creams and whites.
